I absolutely love folk tales. This Slavic folk tale is about a old witch who lives in the forest, who survives by eating small children. She lives in a hut that rests on dancing chicken legs surrounded by a picket fence of bones and skulls.
My dad freaked out when he saw this piece. I pointed out that folk tales are filled with stories of old ladies that eat children. Hansel and Gretel for instance. It didn't make it any less creepy for him... but I suppose that's the point.

This is a very fresh look for Baba Yaga--I like it. (My first cat was named Baba after Baba Yaga--probably because my parents met in Russian class.)
I love this piece. It�s easy to imagine her lulling the children into an imitation of security, and then----Snap! The trap closes and they are done for. Brilliant, simply brilliant!

Great work, wonderful illustration and I love this tale, read it a lot when I was younger. You are right, all the classic fairy tales are deeply sinister!
OMG as a child stories of Baba Yaga scared the living crap out of me (I am Polish).
My version of baba yaga looked more like the witch in snow white.....{{{{shudder!}}}
